One crewman has died in a pirate attack on a Vietnamese ship on December 7, according to an agency.
The VP Asphalt 2
The VP Asphalt 2, carrying 23,000 tonnes of asphalt and manned by 16 sailors, was attacked in the early morning en route from Singapore to Vietnam. The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (VIETNAM MRCC) confirmed that one of the sailors, Tran Duc Dat, was injured during during the attack and died after being airlifted to a Singapore hospital.
The ship, owned by Vietnam Petroleum Transport Joint Stock Company (VIPCO), was about 60 nautical miles off the coast of Singapore when it was seized.
According to the sailors, pirates boarded the ship and bound all the sailors before taking stock of the vessel’s cargo. The pirates left the ship at about an hour later, but not before shooting Dat in the head.
After learning of the incident, VIETNAM MRRC made contact with the ship and asked Singaporean authorities to dispatch a helicopter for the injured sailor. The ship has returned to Singapore to undergo inspection there.
This is the second pirate attack on a Vietnamese ship so far this year, and it occurred in an area very close to that of the first attack on the Sunrise 689 in early October. Vietnamese maritime authorities have yet to make a statement.
