The north-western region has so far attracted 106 foreign direct investment projects with a total capital of USD1.73 billion, according to the Department of Foreign Investment, under the Ministry of Planning and Investment. The investment mainly focuses on processing and manufacturing industries with 68 projects and USD90.5 million in capital, accounting for 78% of the total investment; mineral extraction with three project and USD151.5 million registered investment, approximately 27.5% of the total investment; and recreation and arts with three projects and USD86 million, making up 5% of the total investment. The investors are from 18 countries and territories. Those from China have invested USD890 million in 40 projects, making up 51.4% of the total investment while those from Japan and Australia have poured in USD147.8 million and USD136 million respectively. Lao Cai province has attracted the most investment with 35 projects and USD875 million in registered capital (50.5% of the total investment capital). Followed are Hoa Binh province with 33 projects and USD435.4 million, Son La province with 10 projects and USD280 million; Yen Bai province with 23 projects and USD137.6 million; Lai Chau province with five projects and USD4 million, and Dien Bien province with a USD129,000 project, which has been transferred to a local investor. The mountainous region faces difficulties in transportation, particularly transportation infrastructure, and rising costs, reducing the competitiveness of businesses and affecting foreign investment in the region, the Department of Foreign Investment said./. |
