In 2014, the implementation of poverty reduction programs was accelerated in the Central Highlands, allowing over 34,600 families to escape poverty, thus reducing the poverty rate in the region to 10.12%, according to the Central Highlands steering committee. General Tran Dai Quang, Politburo member, Minister of Public Security and Head of the steering committee, said that in 2014, the Central Highlands region achieved significant progress with economic growth of 8.74%, an increase in industrial production of 11%. According to General Quang, many enterprises in the region recovered their production, contributing to achieving the export turnover of USD2.51 billion, an increase of 49.3%. Last year, the average income per capita in the region reached VND34.9 million per year, an increase of 13.6% compared to 2013. As polices for ethnic minorities and social welfare were strictly implemented, 61,000 people in the region were given vocational training while 99,000 others got jobs. In addition, the educational and medical systems were reinforced to increase people’s living condition. Furthermore, political security and social safety, as well as border sovereignty and security were improved, said General Quang. In the near future, according to General Quang, the steering committee will focus on giving proposals on preferential policies in support of the development in the region, with an aim of developing key products in combination with processing and sale of products. In addition, the steering committee will continue to mobilise resources to link the traffic system in the region, ensuring the progress and quality of the upgrade of Pleiku airport in Gia Lai province, Ho Chi Minh national way and other adopted traffic projects. Moreover, support will be given to develop coffee plantations, ensure power supply, address residential and arable land for ethnic minorities, increase the quality of education, improve healthcare for people, continue to realise measures on vocational training and job creation for rural young labourers. As 2015 will see various important events for the country, the steering committee will act to prevent the scheme of hostile forces to serve the requirements for socio-economic development and defence and security in the region./. |
