The American nuclear power company Westinghouse signed an agreement to train employees of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (Vinatom) on Thursday in Hanoi.

Under the agreement, the company will invite Vietnam’s nuclear experts to work at its technical departments and provide grants for them to study at the University of North Carolina.

The first four experts received scholarships to begin studying this year.

During Thursday’s signing ceremony, Vice Minister of Science and Technology Tran Viet Thanh, said the deal represents a step forward in nuclear power cooperation between the two countries, which reached a Civil Nuclear Agreement last May.

Thanh told Voice of Vietnam that human resource training “is a matter of ultimate importance” as the country develops of its civilian nuclear power program.

Claire Pierangelo, Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Hanoi, said the signing will boost cooperation between the countries in more advanced nuclear power matters.

Westinghouse executives made their first official visit to Vietnam last year to establish a foundation for future cooperation.
