— On February 11, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping discussed initiatives to foster friendly bilateral cooperation over the phone on the occasion of the approaching Lunar New Year (Tet) and the 65th anniversary of Vietnam-China diplomatic ties.
— Le Thanh Hai, Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Secretary, on Wednesday led a delegation to visit border guards in the city’s Can Gio District and handed out gifts to local disadvantaged families on the occasion of the upcoming Tet holiday.

— The Ho Chi Minh City Traffic Safety Committee has directed police officers to investigate the accident occurring at the passenger terminal of Tan Son Nhat International Airport on Tuesday night, injuring 11 people and damaging three cars.
— Measles is spreading at a rapid speed in 25 cities and provinces in Vietnam, Luong Ngoc Khue, head of the Agency of Medical Services Administration under the Ministry of Health, announced on Wednesday. The number of patients has also been doubled in comparison with that of last week.
— The southern province of Binh Duong is now leading the country as regards the number of obese children, according to a 2014 report of the National Institute of Nutrition.

— On February 11, Tran Thanh Liem, a farmer from Binh Thuy District in the southern city of Can Tho, harvested a strange species of heart-shaped watermelon with a map of Vietnam on its skin. Though the farmer put efforts in growing and shaping 43 watermelons, only three of them produced expected yield.
— The local market has seen many kinds of Tet gift baskets containing fake products, those of unknown origin, or even outdated products. Gift baskets including confectionery, jam, and wine sold at a variety of prices have been chosen by local customers for Tet.
Education
— The Ministry of Education and Training has recently announced the results of the contest titled “Em Yeu Lich Su Viet Nam” (I Love Vietnamese History) held for the first time ever in collaboration with the Vietnam Historical Science Association. The contest attracted more than 2,000 entries.
— Three Vietnamese organizations and two individuals on February 10 received awards from the International Atomic Energy Agency for their achievements in using irradiated material to create farming breeds.

— On February 8, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai approved a plan on the Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park by 2030. The target of the plan is to preserve the value of the world’s heritage park, making it one of the most attractive destinations for ecotourism in the Asia – Pacific region.
