At the moment, the existing natural resources play a key role in the lives of poor people in the GMS countries, where 60 million rural people depend on the surrounding environment for food, water, energy and income. However, the exploitation and depletion of the natural resources as well as effects of climate change are threatening the livelihoods of these communities. To protect natural assets is to ensure the sustainable development of the region.
From Jan 27 to Jan 29, 2015, the Fourth GMS Environment Ministers’ Meeting (EMM4) including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, China, Thailand and Vietnam has been held in Myanmar. In this conference, GMS countries have pledged to double efforts to protect and enhance the natural resources (including forests, arable farmland, wetlands and waters) for the sustainable development.
Attending the meeting, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Vietnam Bui Cach Tuyen highlighted the Vietnam’s efforts in the process of environmental protection and sustainable development as well as the achievements of CEP in Vietnam. At the same time, the Deputy Minister affirmed Vietnam’s commitment to increase investment in natural capital, support to enhance cooperation in the GMS to promote comprehensive and sustainable economy towards green economy.
