Secretary of State John Kerry has confirmed the US administration’s invitation to Vietnam’s Communist Party Chief Nguyen Phu Trong to visit the US in 2015.
Kerry also extended New Year greetings to the government and people of Vietnam during a telephone conversation with Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on Friday.
The two top diplomats said they were convinced that 2015 would be a significant year with a series of activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral ties.
The two countries also exhibited determination to conclude negotiations on the US-led 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, on schedule.
Last month, US ambassador to Vietnam Ted Osius told Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung that the US hopes to finalize negotiations for the ambitious deal in March so the Congress can vote on it two months later.
During an interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper last December, Osius also said that he was “optimistic” about the prospect of President Barack Obama visiting Vietnam this year.
