The Central Vietnam Women’s Union, and the General Department of Politics of Vietnam People’s Army held a ceremony marking the 105th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, the 55th anniversary of the legendary “Long-hair army during the anti-US resistance war, the 50th anniversary of the “Three Responsibilities” Movement and presenting Kovalevskaya 2014 awards to outstanding female scientists in Hanoi on March 7.

Member of Politburo and Chairman of Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee, Nguyen Thien Nhan; Secretary of the Party Central Committee and head of its Commission for Mass Mobilization Ha Thi Khiet, leaders of departments, Vietnamese heroic mothers, heroines of armed forces, and outstanding members of the war-time attended the event.
Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan praised women’s outstanding contribution in building and protecting the country and the role of associations and organizations in implementing social policies to guarantee the right of women.
At the ceremony, the annual Kovalevskaya 2014 awards, honoring outstanding female scientists, was presented Professor Doctor Nguyen Thi Kim Lan from the Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry, a leading veterinary specialist with numerous applicable research studies helping famers fight diseases in cattle; and the female staff from the Hanoi Medical University’s histology and embryology department for their project which carries out researching cell technology to cure ocular surface damage.
The prestigious prize, named the great Russian female mathematician Sofia Kovalevskaia, is awarded to female academics with excellent achievements in the sciences or arts and humanities.
The Vietnamese Kovalevskaia Prize Committee was founded in 1985 and is headed by Mrs. Nguyen Thi Binh, former Vice-President of Vietnam.
Over the past 25 years, the Kovalevskaia Prize Committee in Vietnam has selected and awarded prizes to more than 34 individuals and 15 groups nationwide.
