A Vietnamese man was found dead hanging from a belt at a casino in Cambodia, leaving behind heavy debts.

The body of the 53-year-old man, whose name has not been revealed, was discovered inside a guesthouse bathroom of a casino in Svay Rieng Province, near the border with Vietnam, on March 8.

A border guard official confirmed the death on Friday, but said Cambodian police are still investigating the case.

The source said the man was from Hanoi. He traveled all the way south many times to go across the border for gambling, which probably placed him in the dire financial situation.

Gambling is illegal in Vietnam, which has opened several casinos only to foreign nationals.

Thousands of Vietnamese gamblers reportedly cross the border to Cambodia every month.

Vietnamese police said there are 54 casinos and 36 cockfighting pits built along the Cambodian side of the border, mainly targeting gamblers from Vietnam.
