Police in Ho Chi Minh City are investigating an explosion that set a man on fire on Friday afternoon when he was fishing with an electric reel.
The victim Nguyen Huu Duc, 37, has been severely burned and is receiving hospital treatment in critical condition, local media reported.
An official told Kien Thuc reporter that police are considering the possibility of an electric malfunction as the man was fishing under a power grid, with an electric fishing reel.
But no official conclusion has been made.
Eyewitnesses said Duc was among a group of people fishing under the Saigon 2 Bridge at around 5 p.m. when the explosion happened. The others were safe, they said.
Huynh Thi Thu Hong, Duc’s sister-in-law who lives around 30 meters from the accident scene, said the bang sounded like a truck’s tire bursting.
“I ran out of the house and saw him burned black. His clothes were completely torn,” Hong said, cited by news website VnExpress.
Hong said Duc went to the site to fish almost every afternoon.
