A 13-year-old schoolgirl beaten by her classmates in Tra Vinh Province has been sponsored by an international school in Ho Chi Minh City.
The family of the 7th grader, identified only as P, on Monday took her to the Canadian International School System in District 7 for enrollment.
Trinh Quang Dong, chairman of CIS’s board of directors, said the school will sponsor full study and boarding programs for P until she finishes 12th grade.
The school staff on Tuesday held a session to discuss medical and psychological solutions for P’s integration.
“She can choose to go to any of the member schools, including our sister school Albert Einstein, as long as she feels safe,” the school said in a Facebook entry.
“We believe that our supportive teaching and learning community will make up for her damage and bring the smile back to her face.”
Earlier, P was brutally beaten by her class president Duong Thuy Vy and other students at Ly Tu Trong Junior High School on January 13, after she disregarded Vy’s order to buy her some snack.
Punishments
The case caught public attention later on March 8 after a video showing the beating was posted online.
P did not tell anybody about the bullying because she was threatened.
Last week, Tra Vinh Department of Education and Training issued a decision to suspend the school principal Phan Thanh Nguyen and his deputy Vo Thanh Vu for a month.
Vy and two students were suspended for a week, while six others were officially censured.
Following the decision, Nguyen has requested to resign.
“I am the head of the school. I am the first one to be responsible for the regretful incident,” he said.
“I honestly apologize to the victim, her family and relevant agencies.”
P has maintained good academic records for many years and is a member of the provincial aerobic team. She won two gold medals the national competition for students held in Ho Chi Minh City in 2012.
Her father, Nguyen Phuoc Thanh, is a snack vendor and her mother is a stay-at-home mom.
Thanh said his family is thankful to Samaritans, who donated more than VND50 million (US$2,330) to the family, and to CIS for sponsoring her.
