(VOVworld) – Tens of thousands of Italian workers marched through the center of Rome on Saturday against Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s reform policy of the labor market. The march was organized by Italy’s main engineering union, the FIOM. Its leader Maurizio Landini is likely to lead the political left party and is trying to reunite the political left party into what he calls a “social coalition” against Renzi. In his address, Landini accused Prime Minister Renzi of moving his Democratic Party (PD) too far towards the political center, abandoning it traditional roots.
Last month, the Italian government adopted Jobs Act which allowed employers to fire workers for business reasons. Renzi said the Jobs Act will reduce the current record unemployment, which stands at 42% among those below 25.
