The workshop “State Sector Youth Unions for Wildlife Protection” was co-hosted by Biodiversity Conservation Agency and the Youth Union of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) within the project:”Wildlife consumption in Vietnam: Reforming policies and practices to strengthen biodiversity conservation” (WLC Project), funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) via the World Bank.
More than 80 Youth Union Leaders working within Government ministries (Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Science and Technology, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, University of Nature Resources and Environment, University of Natural Resources and Environment, Forestry University and others related agencies) took part in an awareness workshop in Hanoi on March 25, which aimed to mobilize the support of influential young Government officials to contribute to wildlife protection efforts in Vietnam.
Unsustainable levels of wildlife consumption today pose one of the most significant threats to the conservation of biodiversity within Vietnam’s forests, wetlands and protected areas, pushing many species to the brink of extinction. Today’s workshop was part of a strategic approach to raise the profile of the illegal wildlife consumption issue within the Youth, especially the leaders of Youth Union groups representing many ministries and encourage positive behaviour change for wildlife protection. The workshop included topics on biodiversity conservation, wildlife protection, efforts to combat wildlife crime, and the Wildlife Tool Kit in Vietnam…
Dr. Pham Anh Cuong, Director of BCA said “It is certain that education and public awareness raising activities play an important role in the prevention and reduction of illegal wildlife hunting, trade and consumption. Today’s workshop targeted young leaders across many sectors due to the cross-cutting nature of this issue, which affects not only conservation, but also health, national security, the economy, and the whole of society. We need to engage the active participation of the young generation in conservation efforts, to bring about change for the future of Vietnam”.
In the workshop, many opinions and suggestions for more effective implementation of communication activities were shared. Before closing the workshop, the Wildlife Tool Kit was also distributed at the workshop to boost the participation of young Government officials in broad scale communication efforts to reduce consumer demand for wildlife products. The Wildlife Tool Kit is a DVD resource developed by MONRE, containing copies of communication materials to promote wildlife protection, such as reports, posters, banners, information brochures, video clips and public service announcements (PSAs).
