The investor of the bridge project said tolls of VND15,000 per time, VND450,000 per month and VND1.2 million per quarter apply to vehicles of under-12-seat, under-two-ton trucks and commuter buses. The respective charges of VND23,000, VND690,000 and VND1.85 million are levied on those of 12-30 seats and trucks of 2-4 tons.

Vehicles of 31 seats or more and trucks of 4-10 tons pay VND33,000, VND990,000 and VND2.65 million, while the respective tickets for trucks of 10-18 tons and 20-foot container trucks cost VND60,000, VND1.8 million and VND4.85 million.

Trucks of 18 tons or heavier and 40-foot container trucks pay the highest tolls of VND120,000 per time, VND3.6 million per month and VND9.7 million per quarter.

The New Dong Nai Bridge project and the approach roads run from Tan Van Intersection to Vo Nguyen Giap Street in Bien Hoa City. The project got off the ground in June 2008 at a total cost of VND1.877 trillion (nearly US$86.9 million).

Two components were added to the project in the southern province of Dong Nai, with its Amata overpass opened to traffic last February and Tam Hiep tunnel scheduled for completion this month.

Vehicles running from the northern and central regions now have to pay tolls on a number of highways leading to HCMC, including the tollgate at Dong Nai Bridge on National Highway 1A and the station on the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway.

The director of a transport firm in HCMC complained that the opening of toll stations at the city’s gateways could push up transport charges and prices of many products.
