Several workers of Duy Hung Footwear Company in Song Than Industrial Zone in the southern province of Binh Duong caused a stampede after hearing the sound of a deafening explosion from the warehouse of the company at 4.30pm on May 18.
Following the explosion, a fire flared up in the warehouse and quickly spread to adjacent rooms.
Firefighters at Song Than IZ attempted to douse the flames but failed to prevent the fire from approaching other areas of the company.
Fifteen minutes later, the fire spread to the neighboring Shang One Vietnam Company, which produces shoe soles.
Hundreds of firefighters from Binh Duong Province and District 9 of Ho Chi Minh City quickly accessed the scene to put out the fire. Meantime workers from companies in the IZ were mobilized to carry furnishings and materials from the two companies.
By 6am, tens of fire trucks were continuously moved in and out to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby rental rooms.
The inferno was brought under control by 8.30pm after gutting down nearly 1,000 square meter area of the warehouse and factories.
Authorized organs will investigate the cause of the fire, as well as calculate the resulting damage.
