Six thousand communes which are vulnerable to natural disasters, especially relating to climate change in Vietnam, will be assisted with USD5 million to manage risks.

The assistance belongs to the project to increase capacity in managing disaster risks in Vietnam, especially risks relating to climate change, which is sponsored by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the United Nations Development Program.

The project targets to increase institutional ability at the central and local levels relating to legal policies in the disaster risk mitigation strategy. Under the project, 20 provinces that face high risk of being affected by natural disasters will build action plans to deal with natural disasters among their communities.

The project, which will be carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Vietnam Red Cross, the Vietnam Women’s Union and Oxfam Vietnam, will help provinces make and apply plans, and inspect the efficiency of community-based risk management programs.

Vietnam faces the high possibility of being affected by natural disasters. Statistics show that on average, over the past 20 years, Vietnam has lost 1-1.5% of its gross domestic product to natural disasters.

It also indicates that in the 1990-2009 period, Vietnam ranked fifth in the world in terms of losses in lives and property due to natural disasters./.
