HA NOI – The Drug Administration of Viet Nam is keeping a close eye on information relating to two drugs, Yaz and Yasmin, used to prevent pregnancy.
This follows the news that the contraceptives have been linked to the deaths of at least 23 Canadian woman, who died suddenly after developing blood clots.
An agency review released in December reported that women using Yasmin and Yaz had a 1.5 to three times higher risk of blood clots than women on other oral contraceptives.
According to the Vietnamese drug administration, Yaz and Yasmin are “newer-generation” birth control pills and contain active ingredients drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Bayer, a German chemical and pharmaceutical company, makes both.
Yaz has been distributed in Viet Nam since October, 2012, and Yasmin since December, 2010.
Truong Thi Nguyet, from the drug administration said warnings had been sent to hospitals in all localities relating to safety levels of drugs containing drospirenone in September, 2012.
They order provincial departments of health and hospitals to watch for adverse drug reactions, and then file reports with the National Centre for Drug Information.
Nguyet said that previously, warnings of an increased risk of blood clots were issued to those taking the drugs.
The Canadian drug administration agency has been reviewing the safety of Yaz and Yasmin since June 2011. – VNS
