The Ministry of Public Security has proposed to the National Assembly the renewed use of firing squads as the requisite punishment for prisoners who have been sentenced do death.

To date, the lethal injection has not been implemented despite the deadline previously set for its introduction–June 27 this year. He said that the delay is still due to the short supply of the drug.
He added that because of this The Ministry of Public Security is seeking approval from the National Assembly in order to use firing squads again, as well as the deadly injections, to carry out capital punishment where necessary.
In the first six months of this year, the People’s Supreme Procuracy prosecuted 38,224 new criminal cases, up 0.2% from the same period of 2012. Among the cases, 149 were involved in corruption, with 317 people arrested, up 5.7% and 21.5% on-year, respectively.
The number of serious cases has been on the rise, particularly related to banking, drug use and asset robbery.
Recently, Deputy Minister of Public Security, Dang Van Hieu said, since the law on execution concerning capital cases took effect, on July 1, 2011, more than 500 prisoners have been handed the death sentence with 170 scheduled to face deadly injection beginning June 27.
He added that out of five facilities meant to carry out the procedure, three have been installed and are staffed with the correct number of fully qualified personnel.
However, the Ministry of Public Security has once again delayed the start-date for use of lethal injections with no indication of when that might be.
