(VOVworld) – The Syrian Supreme Constitutional Court on Sunday approved 3 out of 24 candidates for the presidential election, scheduled for June 3.

Court spokesperson Amjad Al Khadra said that after reviewing the files of 24 registered candidates, the Constitutional Court only Maher Abdel Hafiz Hajjar, Hassan Abdallah Al Nuri, and incumbent President Bashar Hafez Al Assad.
Hassan Abdallah Al Nuri is former Minister of Administrative Development and Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs from 2000 to 2002. Maher Abdel Hadiz Hajjar is a member of the Syrian Parliament. Syrian government officials believe that President Bashar Al Assad is likely to be re-elected as the other two candidates have little reputation in the Syrian political arena.
