(VEN) – The official visit to the US from July 24-26 by Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang received special attention from people in Vietnam and abroad and gave a new look at cooperative relations between Vietnam and the US after the two parties decided to establish a comprehensive partnership.
Deeper and more practical relations
At their meeting Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang and his US counterpart Barack Obama affirmed their commitment to open a new period of time for bilateral relations between the two countries based on mutual respect and mutual interests. The two parties decided to establish a comprehensive partnership to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation and prosperity in each country, the region and the world.
The two leaders also talked about measures to deepen relations in a more practical and more effective manner in the near future, including exchanging high-ranking delegations and drawing-up new cooperative mechanisms or upgrading existing ones. They underlined that economic, trade and investment cooperation would provide a basis and an engine for the Vietnam-US comprehensive partnership. They also affirmed their commitment to complete negotiations on the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) Agreement as soon as possible, maybe this year. The agreement is expected to foster development goals and create jobs in Vietnam, the US and TPP member countries within the framework of a balanced and comprehensive agreement.
Cooperation in science and technology, particularly nuclear energy, space technology and maritime research, will be boosted. The two sides agreed to enhance cooperation in other areas such as education, national defense and security, charity in an effort to neutralize the effects of the war, while increasing coordination in international and regional forums such as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), East Asia Summit (EAS) and ASEAN-Plus Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM+).
The US remains Vietnam’s important partner
At the US Government’s reception hosted in Washington by US Secretary of State John Kerry, Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang said that economic and trade relations would still play a key role and would remain an engine for boosting multifaceted relations. The US is currently one of Vietnam’s most important partners and the seventh largest investor in the country. He also said that the two countries had better developed their potential for cooperation in science, technology, education and health.
Statistics indicate that Vietnam sold US$8.62 billion worth of goods to the US in the first five months of this year, a 13.9 percent increase from a year ago. The US was Vietnam’s second largest export market, following the European Union. Vietnamese major exports to this market include textiles, garments, leather, footwear and seafood.
The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Vietnam predicted that bilateral trade would reach more than US$27 billion this year and more than US$33 billion by 2015, including more than US$27 billion in Vietnamese exports and more than US$6 billion in Vietnamese import purchases.
Truong Tan Sang said that Vietnam would take strong measures to ensure attractiveness to US investors, while encouraging them to expand their operations and invest in long-term business in Vietnam, particularly in areas such as high technology, energy, manufacturing, environment, information technology, agricultural modernization and human resources development to contribute to increasing Vietnam to a higher level of the global value chain./.
