(VEN) – Increased signs of climate change, such as storms, floods, erosion and landslides have appeared in Binh Dinh Province in the past decade. These changes have destroyed the landscape and infrastructure and had negative effect on the province’s tourism activities.
As of date, people in Binh Dinh Province have still remained horrifying about the historical flood in March 2009. The flood made more than 50 percent of area of a tourist area on the banks of the Kut River flooded for several days. After the flood, 80 percent of green trees in tourist areas were broken down and 10 houses on stilts were destroyed. In addition, embankments and roads along the river were broken and two bridges connecting the two banks of the Kut River was swept away. These damages reached an estimated VND700 million. After nearly three years, tourist areas in Binh Dinh Province only recovered 60 percent of damages.
Not only causing erosion and landslides, changes in the weather have caused negative effect to tourism activities, directly affecting to revenues of tourism businesses in the province.
The rainy season in the province usually takes place in September and October. Therefore, in these two months, Ghenh Rang tourist area and restaurants in the province allow staff on vacation and prepare for some eating and drinking programs in the winter. However, due to fluctuations in terms of the weather in Binh Dinh Province, plans have been upset, causing losses in terms of revenues for tourist areas and restaurants. A typical example is the Queen restaurant. Revenues of this restaurant only reached 42 percent of the 2011′s plan while this figure reached 80 percent of the 2010′s plan.
Tran Thu Phuong from the Center for Natural Resources and Environmental Studies (CRES) of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi said that to cope with the impact of climate change, Binh Dinh Province should implement immediate and long-term solutions, such as propagandizing the impact of climate change, adjusting plans in response to climate change and applying technological measures to prevent erosion and landslides.
Binh Dinh Province should research measures to prevent erosion and landslides by embankments in Ghenh Rang and Nui Ba tourist areas and Canh Tien Tower. In addition, the province should fill holes and gullies and plant trees and grass in tourist destinations; repair and solidify historical relics.
Due to consequences caused by climate change, by 2020-2030, Binh Dinh’s tourism sector will have to face many difficulties and risks due to a sea level rise and changes in temperature and precipitation. Tourist destinations along the coast will be affected by climate change. |
In the long term, Binh Dinh Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and agencies should adopt plans to propagandize and raise the community awareness about negative effect and impact of climate change to the tourism sector. In particular, the province should review the overall tourism development plan, limit land loss due to a sea-level rise, adopt plans to respond to tsunami and solidify buildings to reduce damages caused by tsunami, storms and floods./.
