Vietnam’s former best female player Hoang Thanh Trang, now playing for Hungary, won the European Individual Women’s Chess Championship 2013 in Belgrade, Serbia on Saturday local time.
Trang has played for Hungary since 2006 and has competed at the European Individual Women’s Chess Championship six times. But this is the first time she has won the championship.
Trang, who has an elo rating of 2467 and stands 31st in the women’s world rankings, drew with Lithuanian contestant Cmilyte Viktorija, ranked 17 with elo 2497, in the final round to win the title with 9 points from 11 games without a loss.
Thanh Trang took several significant wins, especially one against the 2012 European champion Gunina Valentina of Russia, ranked 13th in the world, in the 8th round, and a win over the 20th-ranked Russian Kosteniuk Alexandra in the penultimate round.
Speaking after winning the title, the 33-year-old Trang said, “My dream has come true after almost thirty years of playing chess. Now, I’m thinking of another dream: become the world champion.”
