(VOV) – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc paid a working visit to the US from August 21-23 to strengthen cooperation in HIV/AIDS prevention, judicial reform, and humanitarian issues.



Phuc met with Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius, and leaders of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Office of US Global AIDS Coordinator.

He briefed his hosts on Vietnam’s recent socio-economic development achievements, especially its judicial reform and drug abuse -HIV/AIDS prevention efforts.


He appreciated the US’s assistance for Vietnam’s health care, humanitarianism, education-training, environment, relief in war aftermath, and drug-related crime prevention.


He noted that those cooperation activities have made a positive contribution to the development of bilateral relations between the two countries in recent times.


US officials spoke highly of Vietnam’s development and international integration achievements, as well as its success in combating HIV/AIDS and other epidemics.

They voiced the US’s resolve to boost the comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and pledged to support and share its experience with Vietnam in judicial reform, training of judicial staff, drug abuse-HIV/AIDS prevention, and counterterrorism.


Deputy PM Phuc visited a drug court in Washington DC and the Salvation Army Harbour Light Centre that treats drug addicts.


At a meeting with the Vietnamese Embassy staff, Phuc asked the embassy help promote the newly-established comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the US and pay more attention to supporting Vietnamese expats in the US.
