First Vietnamese doctor to grab German award

Dr Nguyen The Hoang from the Hanoi-based Military Central Hospital 108 has become the first Vietnamese to receive the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany.

Hoang, one of four Asians awarded the prestigious German prize, is Deputy Director of Hospital 108′s Trauma and Orthopaedics Institute. He was honoured for his research in the field of regenerative medicine and his contribution to reconstructive surgery at a ceremony held in Bamberg city this year.


The result of his research project now helps treat patients in Military Central Hospital 108.


It was also published in a number of prestigious scientific magazines in the US .


Graduated from the military medical institute in 1987, Hoang received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in 1994 to pursue a doctorate degree at Rechts der Isar Hospital run by the University of Munich .


The Vietnamese doctor was also awarded the Johann Nepomuk von Nussbaum Research Award of the German Surgical Society in 1999 and the Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (VIFOTEC) Award in 2010.


The Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award is one of the most coveted awards the German Government gives to brilliant researchers.-VNA
