(VOV) – Leaders of Vietnam’s Quang Tri province and Laos’ Savannakhet province discussed the possibility of strengthening cooperation in 2014-2016 at a meeting in Dong Ha city on August 11.

They agreed to create favourable conditions for their border localities and businesses to meet annually to exchange experience and support each other.

Both sides will closely study their potential, strengths and socio-economic development strategies to propose cooperation plans.

They will work closely to realize the “Joint statement” and “Savannakhet Statement” adopted at the 2nd Vice Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the East-West Economic Corridor (EWEC) in Laos on May 16, 2013.

Accordingly, both sides will cooperate in addressing challenges concerning transportation, trade, tourism, investment promotion and procedure simplification at the Lao Bao-Densavanh border gate pair to fully tap into the potential of the EWEC.

They will mobilize all resources to build the Lao Bao special trade economic zone and the Densavanh boundary economic zone.

In the 2014-2016 period, Quang Tri will earmark VND6 billion from its budget to support Savannakhet in implementing projects on education and training, health care, agriculture or infrastructure construction in border areas.

The leaders reached consensus on further strengthening the exchange of information, experience and coordination amongst their army, police, border guard, and foreign affairs agencies.

Quang Tri leaders assured their Lao counterparts that the Vietnamese province will continue training 100 army officers and sergeants and police officers of Savannakhet ever year.

The two provinces were also committed to building their shared borderline of stability, peace, cooperation and development, and searching and repatriating remains of volunteer Vietnamese soldiers and experts who sacrificed their lives in Laos.

Both sides signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation for 2014-2016.
