(CPV) – On the 46th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) (August 8) and 18th year of Vietnam’s membership of the association (July 28), on August 8, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) hosted a ceremony to hoist the ASEAN flag and Vietnam’s national flags to mark the events.
Over the past 46 years, ASEAN has continued to expand cooperation and increase links. It has created an important position in the region and in the world with active contributions to peace, stability, cooperation and development in Southeast Asia and the Asia – Pacific region.
With the target to establish the ASEAN Community by 2015, ASEAN is seeing strong changes in quality through efforts to increase cooperation and internal links in the political-security, economic and cultural-social pillars, together with narrowing the gap in development.
In addition, it has expanded and raised the multilateral relation of mutual interest with external partners, including powerful countries and large centres of the world.
ASEAN has become the leading nucleus in important dialogues and cooperation, including ASEAN+1, ASEAN+3, East Asia Summit (EAS), and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), and a strong impetus for cooperation and links in Eastern Asian region.
Vietnam officially joined ASEAN on 28 July 1995. 18 years after joining the association, Vietnam has made effective contributions to its operation. Vietnam is joining hands with ASEAN countries to realise the target on building the ASEAN Community by 2015.
With the spirit “proactive, active and responsible”, Vietnam has been making effective contributions to ASEAN cooperation, and working with ASEAN members to build up a linked and strong ASEAN Community, contributing to the join target of peace, stability and development in the region./.
