(VOV) – Heavy downpours have caused flash floods and landslides in Ban Khoang commune of the northern mountain province of Lao Cai, leaving 25 locals dead or missing.
At 21.30pm on September 4 the natural disaster swept away a number of houses of teachers of Ban Khoang high school in Sapa district.
As of 02.00am on September 5, rescue workers saved 11 people and found two dead bodies. They were combing through the region in the hope of searching for the remaining 12 others.
However, violent floodwaters and heavy rains hampered rescue efforts. Mud and soil blocked traffic from Sapa township to Ban Khoang high school.
The school is 20km north-west of the township.
The floodwaters also swept away 13 local residents’ houses and three cars, and submerged many fish farms and subsidiary crops.
Elsewhere in Lao Cai province, heavy downpours submerged many residential areas of Muong La district. Traffic to the district’s general hospital was disrupted due to rising floodwaters.
The trough of low pressure is forecast to dump more rain on Son La and other provinces in northern Vietnam in the coming days.
