The heavy rains and flooding on the night of September 4 washed away 13 houses and 12 people in the mountainous Lao Cai Province.
Van Ho A Village in Sapa’s Ban Khoang Commune was hit hardest, with landslides and rain during the night. The local rescuers arrived on the scene to find help with the injured and evacuate the village.
Vietnamplus reported that the flood also damaged a dormitory for school staff. As of 2am on September 5, 11 teachers had been rescued and 2 bodies found, but 12 are still missing.
The school headmaster said most teachers had stayed at school to prepare for the first day of the school year on September 5 so their casualties is high.
The steering committees for flood and storm damage control of both Sapa District and Lao Cai Province have sent their forces but due to landslide, many of the rescue equipment still cannot gain the access to the school.
Nguyen Thanh Duong, Vice Chairman of Lao Cai People’s Committee said provincial agencies will carry out damage control.
According to the initial reports, a total 25 people, including two children, are among the missing, injured or killed during the flood. National Highway 4, which connects Lao Cai with Ha Giang Province has been blocked because of the landslide. National Highway 279 linking to Lai Chau Province has also suffered damage.
