Under the tough economic situations of Vietnam and the world, trading activities between Vietnamand Japan also have been negatively affected. Thus, promotion activities to support businesses of the two countries have become more necessary. Known as trusted trade promotion players between enterprises of the two countries, in recent years, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and Vietnam- Japan Business Forum have been actively implementing various activities to create business opportunities for the business communities of the two countries.

In the first 6 months of 2013, VCCI and the Vietnam – Japan Business Forum held several programmes to promote cooperation and bilateral investment among businesses of the two countries.

In particular, on 5 August 2013, the “Recognising and Cutting Waste in Japanese Manner” conference was jointly held in Hanoi by VCCI and Hirayama, Japan, a leading company in training for the Toyota Production System (TPS) – Production Mechanism of Toyota. Mr Terasaki Akashi, a keynote speaker of the conference as well as a senior professional of TPS, introduced to businesses the basic knowledge and experience which have been summarised in the historical development of Japan’s manufacturing.

VCCI in collaboration with JETRO also organised a workshop on “Trade and Investment Promotion between Vietnam and Japan” on May 14, 2013 in Hanoi, on the occasion of the visit of 34 Japanese businesses. These companies operate in the service sector, namely wholesale and retail, dining, beauty and education, and they are planning to do business in Vietnam. They wish to negotiate with potential Vietnamese enterprises.

At VCCI’s branches, a number of training courses and forums to share valuable business experiences of the Japanese experts with Vietnam have been organised, for example, a workshop on “Introduction to improvement activities for Vietnamese enterprises, the lessons and experiences of 5S and Kaizen models held in Ho Chi Minh City; the workshop on Vietnam- Japan Business Forum held in Vung Tau and the workshop on “Leadership and business management experience in Japan” held in Hai Phong.

In 2012, to promote further trade promotion and investment for the business community of Vietnam and Japan, Vietnam- Japan Business Forum held a business meeting between Vietnamese and Japanese businesses (Fukuoka) in Hanoi. The meeting attracted many Vietnamese investors as well as businesses. Six Japanese companies mainly operating in the fields of environmental industry, power, electric power, and construction also attended the event.

In particular, VCCI has organised workshops on IPO and M&A activities between Japan and Vietnam in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. VCCI has also coordinated with other organisations such as Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) to organise meetings and seminars between Vietnamese and Japanese businesses attracting hundreds of Japanese and Vietnamese companies to exchange and share experiences.

Under the cooperation agreement with the Department of Trade and Industry of Fukuoka, Japan on building business supporting programmes for Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises, Vietnam- Japan Business Forum has also organised many seminars on exchanging business experience between Vietnamese and Japanese enterprises in the supporting industry sector. On the basis of the theories, the Vietnamese business delegation conducted market research and visited in 8 typical enterprises of Fukuoka.

In addition, the Vietnam – Japan Business Forum is now maintaining and developing an electronic portal between Vietnam and Japan. On average, each day more than 1,800 users access the electronic portal. The portal provides information for Vietnamese and Japanese businesses via email and phone, and gives guidelines for Vietnamese businesses to attend fairs and exhibitions related to the Japanese market, as well as facilitating some Japanese business delegations in the areas of building material, construction, IT and fisheries to visit and work with Vietnamese businesses.

In the future, expected around September of 2013, VCCI will facilitate a Vietnam business delegation to attend activities within Vietnam Day in Japan.

VCCI will also hold a Vietnam and Japan Economic Summit in Hanoi in September which is a significant event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan.

VCCI also coordinates with other organisations to organize seminars and meetings between Vietnamese businesses and Japanese businesses in October 2013, and a number of seminars and meetings between Japanese and Vietnamese enterprises in provinces of Thanh Hoa, Da Nang and Can Tho.

However, according to VCCI, although the two countries have provided business information, there are still needs in study material, guidance, market research, and information of industries, trade practices, payment methods, and business and investment procedures. Therefore, VCCI recommends that the government and other authorities make use of the financial and human resources to improve the quality of the studies on the general situation, business potential of the Japanese market, and coordinate to provide business information to the businesses; besides, government agencies should build a mutual information system shared among the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Planning and Investment to provide information about business delegation and cooperation programmes with Japan to help the Vietnam – Japan Business Forum to actively plan and develop joint programmes.
