During the trial operation of the plant, the company did not send any written notice to the local authorities.

Bui Xuan Loc, Head of Kinh Mon district Division of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE), on 5 September said, “Vietnam Mineral Exploitation, Processing, Export, and Import Co., Ltd. has suspended trial operation of its metallurgic waste treatment plant in Phu Thu district town to complete environmental protection works according to functional agencies’ requirements.”

Earlier, many households in Phu Thu district town last August requested functional agencies to handle the metallurgic waste treatment plant for discharging waste gas and water to the environment, destroying some rice areas, killing fish, and affecting people’s health.

Through inspection, the NRE Department determined that Vietnam Mineral Exploitation, Processing, Export, and Import Co., Ltd. had not invested in completing the storehouse and ground system for metallurgic waste gathering, so the waste flowed along with rainwater to the paddy fields around the plant.

Besides, during the trial operation of the plant, the company did not send any written notice to the local authorities.

The NRE Department has required Vietnam Mineral Exploitation, Processing, Export, and Import Co., Ltd. to temporarily stop the trial operation, which will be continued only after the company completes the environmental treatment works and reports in writing to competent agencies.

During the operation process, the company must measure, check, and assess the effectiveness of environmental treatment. The measurement and checking must be carried out under supervision of professional bodies and representatives of the local authorities and people.
