(VOV) -The relationship between Vietnam and Egypt has been built on a fine traditional background as the two countries share historical similarities, said a Vietnamese diplomat.

In an interview granted to a Cairo-based Vietnam News Agency correspondent on September 1 marking 50 years of Vietnam-Egypt diplomatic ties, Vietnamese Ambassador to Egypt Dao Thanh Chung highlighted the growing ties between the two countries over the years.
He affirmed that Egypt always holds an important position in Vietnam’s external policy. Both countries established diplomatic ties in 1963 and opened their embassies in each other’s capitals a year later.
The late President Ho Chi Minh decided to open a Vietnamese trade office in Egypt during his visit to this North African country in 1958.
The Vietnamese diplomat noted that bilateral ties have grown and flourished in all areas since 1991, spanning politics, economics, culture, science and technology, education, tourism, and investment.
Vietnam and Egypt have signed many cooperation agreements, and have agreed to establish the inter-government committee to strengthen ties..
Two-way trade turnover reached US$304.6 million in 2012, helping Egypt become Vietnam’s second largest market in the Middle East and North Africa.
The two countries are boosting investment cooperation in the fields of telecommunications, oil and gas, and agriculture, said the Ambassador.
He expressed his belief that Vietnam-Egypt relations will be deepened even more effectively and comprehensively in the future.
He said he hopes Egypt will soon overcome the challenges and difficulties it faces to restore economic growth, promote reform process and improve people’s living conditions.
