Promotion of sustainable consumption and production in Viet Nam

The 6th national roundtable on sustainable consumption and production took place in Da Nang from 27 to 28 September. The event was hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.


Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environment, Mr Bui Cach Tuyen, reported that Viet Nam has made significant achievements in the fields of economy, society and environment after 10 years of implementation of its strategic orientation for sustainable development. Viet Nam is no longer among the underdeveloped countries of the world and has moved onto the ranks of middle-income countries.More concerns and improvements have been given to environmental protection.However, the country still deals with many problems, including the overexploitation of natural resources, environmental pollutions, degradation of biodiversity and impacts of climate changes.


The Vice Chairman of Da Nang People’s Committee, Mr Vo Duy Khuong, said that the city is striving to become a sustainable development model of Viet Nam. Da Nang aims to achieve all the criteria to become an environmentally-friendly city by 2020, including 100% of industrial and domestic grey water being treated, 70% of solid waste recycled, and 25% of water reused.


The conference provided a platform for managers and enterprises to propose suitable ideas and solutions for effective implementation of sustainable consumption and production activities in Viet Nam. In addition, it would help to fulfil the goals and duties of national strategies on socio-economic development and environmental protection.
