Protection of the geographical indications “Binh Minh” for Nam Roi grapefruit

On August 29, 2013, Intellectual Property Department has issued Decision No. 2064/QD-SHTT on certificate of registration of the geographical indications No 00036 for products of “Binh Minh” Nam Roi grapefruit. Vinh Long Provincial People’s Committee manages the Geographical Indications of “Binh Minh” for Nam Roi grapefruit’s products.


The sense: Nam Roi Pomelo is pear-shaped, low knob, as ripened it turns green yellow to yellow, thin peel, easily peeled. The average weight of grapefruit around 1kg – 1, 4 kg, thick flesh, and eatable rate is 55-60 %, regular segments, easy to split, with strong smells, and especially very small seeds or no seeds. This is a different striking characteristic between Nam Roi pomelo grown in Binh Minh and Nam Roi pomelo grown in other regions.


The quality: Binh Minh Nam Roi pomelo tastes sweet, slightly sour, and not bitter. Average water content of 89 % (the highest 90.41 %, the lowest 88.13 %), average dry matter content of 10.58 % (the highest 11.87 % and the lowest 9.59 %), average sugar level of 6.88 % (the highest 7.91 % and the lowest 5.8 %), solid content (degrees Brix) average 10.23 % (the highest 10.82 % and the lowest 9.67 %), average acid content 0.48 % (maximum 0.63 %, the lowest 0.32 %), the average vitamin C level of 55.54 mg/100 g (the highest 67.86 mg , the lowest 49.16 mg ) .


Reputation: quality characteristics and peculiarities of Binh Minh Nam Roi grapefruit is due to soil conditions suited to growth and development. Growing areas Binh Minh Nam Roi pemelo located in three largest rivers such as Hau, Tra On, and Mang Thit and form a kind of the characterized microclimate. It creates the natural advantages helping the fertile land, rich alluvial and full water for irrigation year round and contributes to create good and stable quality grapefruit.


In addition to the characteristics of natural conditions, the nature quality characteristics of Nam Roi grapefruit are also due to cultivation techniques and higher cultivation level of people.


The geographical area: Including commune of My Hoa, My Thuan, Binh Dong, Dong Thanh, Dong Thach Thuan An, and Cai Von town of Binh Minh district, Vinh Long province.
