A stamp set featuring Alexandre Yersin, a French physician and bacteriologist who spent most of life in Vietnam
Nhan Dan Online – On September 20, Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications issued a commemorative stamp set entitled 150th Birth Anniversary of Alexandre Yersin (1863 – 1943).
The stamp set bears a design created by French artist Yves Beaujard and is a Vietnam and France special issue to commemorate the French physician and bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin and mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and France.
Alexandre Yersin, born in 1863, left France in 1890 to settle in Nha Trang in central Vietnam, where he founded the Nha Trang Pasteur Institute.
He is also the first headmaster of the Hanoi Medical University, which was established in 1902 under the French name École de Médecine de l’Indochine.
He is well remembered in Vietnam as a devoted scientist and beneficent physician.
One stamp features the young scientist against the background of the Pasteur Institute in Paris where he began his career.
The other features the portrait of Yersin in front of the juxtaposition of the Pasteur Institute in Nha Trang and the Lam Vien Plateau.
The same day, Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications launched a website dedicated to reporting events marking Vietnam – France diplomatic ties.
The website is available in both Vietnamese and French and is linked to a similar site built by the Institut Français.
