A police officer is suspected of running down two women, leaving one dead and the other seriously injured in the northern city of Hai Phong.


Hai Phong police announced on Friday that they identified city police pfficer Col. Ta Xuan Phuong as the driver of the car that caused the fatal accident the day before.


Initial information showed that Phuong was driving a seven-seat Nissan from the city center to Thuy Nguyen District when he hit Nguyen Thi Mai, who was riding a bicycle in the same direction.


Mai, 61, and her bike were dragged for about 200 meters.


The car then hit Nguyen Thi Lan, 32, who was also riding a bicycle, before crashing into a tree on the sidewalk and stopping.


The victims were rushed to Viet – Tiep Hospital, where Mai succumbed to brain trauma the next day, and Lan is now being treated for broken legs.


VnExpress online newspaper quoted witnesses as saying that the accident happened when the car was moving at a high speed.


When the driver got out of his car, he stunk of alcohol, a witness told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.


Hai Phong police said they are investigating the case.
