The education ministry has requested that a deputy professor and PhD holder be stripped of his titles after he was found to have plagiarized his doctoral thesis.
A Tuoi Tre report Sunday said the Ministry of Education and Training has asked the National Council of Professorships to revoke Hoang Xuan Que’s deputy professor title. The ministry also asked the University Education Department to take away his doctorate degree.
The council has confirmed accusations that Hoang, now deputy head of the Banking and Finance Department at the National Economics University, copied around 30 percent (52.5 per 159 pages) of his 2003 thesis from a doctoral thesis written a year earlier.
Both theses dealt with measures to perfect Vietnam’s monetary policies, and Hoang’s work had reused parts from a thesis by Mai Thanh Que from the Banking Academy in Hanoi without crediting the latter.
No details were available about what actions have been taken on the council that gave Hoang a pass.
Transparency International has said in its regular reports that corruption in the education sector in Vietnam is highly problematic and considered a major issue for both government and the public.
