Nhan Dan – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan commended the sacrifices and contributions of youth volunteers to national defence and construction during his meeting with the Vietnam Wartime Youth Volunteers’ Association (WYVA) on October 22.

Politburo member Nhan, who is also the Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, hailed the association’s important role in educating and encouraging today’s youth to uphold the spirit of volunteerism and pioneer national socio-economic development, particularly in remote, isolated areas and border localities.

WYVA Chairman Nguyen Anh Lien briefed the government leader on the association’s achievements during nearly ten years of operation. The WYVA has actively coordinated with authorised agencies to ensure beneficial policies for over 280,000 wartime youth volunteers, raising roughly VND300 billion (US$14.1 million) to build 200 houses of affection and helping 100,000 volunteers out of poverty.

The association also proposed some suggestions addressing policies for war invalids and martyrs and bestowing the title ‘Hero of People’s Armed Forces’ to individuals who made outstanding sacrifices in the ‘Dien Bien Phu Victory’ on the 60th anniversary of the battle next year.

Deputy PM Nhan welcomed the sincere recommendations of the WYVA, affirming that the Party and State always give special attention and constant care to wartime youth volunteers. He promised to submit the suggestions to the Prime Minister for consideration and approval.

The WYVA currently has over 380,000 members, with the largest number – roughly 50,000 – in central Thanh Hoa province.
