On Oct 7th, at the meeting with the delegation from Toulouse (France), who came to visit Hanoi and to attend the Toulouse Culture Week in Vietnam, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Bich Ngoc, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee expressed the wish that Toulouse would continue to help Hanoi with urban planning, especially for the ancient village of Duong Lam.
Ms. Ngoc said that Hanoi has 5,000 historic sites, accounting for the majority the whole country’s historic sites, of which 2,000 have been ranked, and many have been recognized as cultural heritages by the UNESCO, such as Thang Long Imperial Citadel, the Temple of Literature. Therefore, cooperative work with foreign partners like Toulouse, who are experienced in the conservation and promotion of historic cities,is essential.
As for Duong Lam, this is the first village of ancient Vietnamese in Northern Vietnam to be recognized as a national historic site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, butis currently confronted with many problems concerning conservation. Previously, 78 households in Duong Lam ancient village (located in Son Tay town, Hanoi) signed in a letter offering to return the village’s title as national historic site. The case has attracted much public attention. The reason given by those civilians is that as the result of the title, they are not permitted to build houses or even need to apply and wait for approval from the authorities regarding home repair.
