Tuoi Tre Newspaper has the honor to publish – for the first time – the first set of pictures capturing General Vo Nguyen Giap on his expedition to the Ho Chi Minh Trail during wartime shot by photo critic Manh Thuong.
The photos, which Thuong sent to Tuoi Tre and which he said had never been published anywhere before, were shot when the photographer followed General Giap on his expedition to examine the situation and encourage soldiers shortly after the successful the Southern Laos No.9 Street Campaign around the year 1973.
These include many pictures, many of which included lieutenant-general Dong Sy Nguyen – former commander of Truong Son Corps. Lieutenant-general Dong Sy Nguyen has confirmed with Tuoi Tre about the origin and authenticity of the pictures.
Hong Phuong, former vice president of the Ho Chi Minh City Journalist Association, has also sent to Tuoi Tre newspaper a rare photograph of General Vo Nguyen Giap at the funeral of President Ho Chi Minh at Ba Dinh Square in Hanoi in 1969.
“Though 44 years have passed, I still remember the moment that made the historical photo. It was around 9am on September 9, 1969, at Ba Dinh Square, at the memorial ceremony for President Ho Chi Minh. After the eulogy from the Party Central Committee ended, state leaders walked around to meet with local people around the area.”
“Making my way through the crowd with many other colleagues approaching General Vo Nguyen Giap, I took the picture when General Giap began to hug a young person who was bursting into tears. I really like the title of the photo: Pain and responsibilities”.
