Australian Government has announced to contribute USD9.4 million in aid to assist the Philippines in the wake of the devastating typhoon Haiyan.

Earlier, Australia announced support of AUD400,000 (USD375,000) for emergency supplies.

Addressing a press conference in Canberra on November 11, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said about USD3 million will be spent through Australian non-government organisations and USD1 million will go towards the deployment of an Australian medical team.

A further USD1 million will be used for food and other essential items, such as tarpaulins, water containers and mosquito nets, and USD1 million will go to the Red Cross.

Minister Julie Bishop described the destruction in the country as a “disaster on a massive scale”. The typhoon killed an estimated 10,000 people and displaced nearly 620,000 people. About 9.5 million people across nine regions were effected, the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement./.
