In Long An province, after having trademark, both value of a lot of farm produces and benefits of farmers and enterprises were increased.
Long An is a province which has many strengths with lots of special products such as Nang Thom Cho Dao rice, Chau Thanh dragon fruit, Long Tri watermelon, Ben Luc pineapple and etc. Building trademark to raise the value of farm produces has been specially taken care by not only functional departments in this province but also enterprises, cooperatives and farmers.
Since a long time ago, Chau Thanh dragon fruit of Long An province, which had been known for its beautiful red color, sweet flavor, had not been officially acknowledged by customers. In front of this situation, Tam Vu dragon fruit cooperative of Chau Thanh district had suggested this province to conduct and support building “Tam Vu dragon fruit” brand. By the middle of 2011, Intellectual Property Department granted this certificate.
Since then, the dragon fruit’s output to export of just Tam Vu cooperative has increased from nearly 2tons/ha/year to 6tons/ha/year, its price has also been more stable. The important thing is that before having trademark, Tam Vu dragon fruit was just exported indirectly through Chinese merchants, but now it has been exported to Thailand. Recently, German customers have come to this cooperative and put the cooperation relationship to consume dragon fruit.
Problem at the present time is that cooperative members have to find out the ways to guarantee the products’ quality and quantity in contracts to keep the brand firmly. Mr. Truong Quang An, Director of Tam Vu dragon fruit cooperative said that “Thanks to building up the trademark, the cooperative’s products have been known and sold everywhere.”
Similarly, 3 other trademarks of dragon fruit at Chau Thanh were granted the certificates by Intellectual Property Department. And to raise trademark scale, Department of Science and Technology of Long An is building up a trademark “Chau Thanh dragon fruit” for all these four brands to introduce to international friends.
The reality in producing and consuming the granted trademarks such as dragon fruit, Nang Thom Cho Dao rice and 23 other brands of Long An have more and more cooperatives, units, business enterprises that realize the importance of this issue. Long An province is also specially concerned and encouraged building farm produces’ trademark. Building a goods’ brand costs approximately 40 million VND and it is totally supported by the province.
Mr. Mai Van Nhieu, director of Long An Department of Science and Technology said that: “To have trademark and prestige, primarily products that must have good quality and reasonable price. Building trademark is very important because it is a vital matter of enterprises.”
Building farm produces’ trademark is difficult, but to maintain and develop that trademark are more difficult. Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Long An province has encouraged, supported to create large sample field model 63 ha in Nang Thom Cho Dao rice area with the desire to improve the rice’s yield and quality, especially bringing this product to a large amount of consumers.
Farmers will be guided to grow dragon fruit and many special products following VietGap and Globalgap standards, to ensure quality, hygiene and food safety. Mr. Le Minh Duc, director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in Long An province, said: “For the branded farm produces, the agriculture guided techniques to farmers to ensure quality, maintain prestige for products. For farm produces which have been known but has not been officially recognized, the agriculture encouraged cooperatives and cooperative organizations to build trademarks to ensure the output and enhance the value of farm produces.”
Besides Chau Thanh dragon fruit, Nang Thom Cho Dao rice, Long An also has many other farm produces which could build trademarks such as Ben Luc lemon, Dong Thap Muoi watermelon and etc.
Recently, while food production has reached the number of 2.8 million tons/year, Long An emphasized on improving production efficiency per an unit area, bringing economic benefits to farmers. To get those aims, improving the quality and building trademarks for farm produces is very necessary.
