A poor couple in Hanoi’s Thanh Oai District is calling on the community help them save their 13-month old son from a rare blood disease.
The little son Ha Thanh Binh and his mother Ha Thanh Binh is said to be nearing death and is in urgent need of an expensive spinal cord surgery which the family cannot afford.
On the boy’s arrival at the Institute Hematology and Blood Transfusion, many people could not hold back their tears when they saw him, always known to be full of joy, on the verge of death due to juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia.
Then, when the young mother, Ta Thi Nhung, saw the test results, she could not believe her eyes, and thought that the doctor might given her someone else’s results by mistake.
Nhung is a local young union carde who has always disseminated knowledge about blood-related diseases to the public, but now her son is the patient.
The disease has caused his liver, and other vital organs to become swollen, particularly in his belly.
The father, Ha Thanh Son said, “We were very careful to have medical checks during the pregnancy and everything was normal. When my son was 10 months old, he showed unusual signs such as fevers and contusions at joints. We were so shocked to find out the truth.”
According to doctors, the boy’s disease is a rare blood cancer. Medicine can only to slow down the disease, but as to any viable cure, the only option is a spinal cord transplant.
However, any donors must be his siblings and he is the firstborn child of the family. The operation is also very expensive.
The couple is determined to provide the treatment for their son, but they have very little money and feel powerless. The expense of the surgery is billions of VND.
