Quang Ngai provincial people’s committee (PPC) has just sent its request for removing 6 hydropower projects out of the province’s electric plan to the Ministry of Industrial and Trade (MIT), Friday November 22.

The would-be-revoked hydropower plants are Nuoc Lac (3.5 MW), Tam Rao (4.9 MW), Tam Linh (4.5 MW), Son Tra 2(12.6 MW), Song Tang I (7MW) and Song Tang II (4 MW).

Earlier, the local government, in its overall review for hydroelectricity projects in the province, cancelled 7 hydropower projects because those, as explained, will not profit local socio-economic development as expected and will seriously damage surrounding environment.

If PPC receives approval from MIT, there are only 12 projects in the list of provincial hydroelectricity strategy with total capacity of 293.4 MW.

In fact, the increase of hydropower plants in the central and central highland provinces of Vietnam has been criticized for partly causing as many as huge floods in lowland regions in recent years.
