With the depression that hit central Vietnam this morning, Vietnam has experienced 19 storms and tropical depressions so far this year, three higher than the record figure in 1964, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported.
The 1964 record has been broken although there is a month and half ahead before the year 2013 closes, said Le Thanh Hai, the center’s deputy director.
In 1964 Vietnam suffered 16 storms and tropical depressions, but this record has been broken recently, with 13 storms and six depressions having so far hit the country, he said.
Between 1964 and this year, there was 10-13 storms per year only, Hai said.
One more notable point is that in the past, the country suffered only one storm with winds of 118-133 kph or higher per year, but so far this year, two storms with such wind forces have hit Vietnam, Hai said.
Regarding super typhoon Haiyan that slashed the central Philippines on November 8 that killed at least 2,300 people there before weakening and hitting northern Vietnam and southern China, the Center and many international meteorological agencies consider it one of the world’s strongest storms ever observed.
The northwest Pacific has also seen a new record in the number of storms and tropical depression.
The sea area has seen 31 storms and depressions so far this year, compared with the average number of 28 in the past years, the center said.
