The Vietnamese government plans to increase allowance for senior citizens from January 1, 2014, according to Nguyen The Phuong, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment.

A mission team from the National Committee for Elderly People on November 21 liaised with Ho Chi Minh City officials over implementing related policies for senior citizens in the City.
Nguyen The Phuong, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, said the government plans to double the allowance for senior citizens.
The Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs had petitioned for an increase in senior citizens allowance from present VND240,000 to VND380,000 a month. Currently HCMC has around 500,000 elderly citizens.
At the meeting, Hua Ngoc Thuan, Deputy Chairman of HCMC People’s Committee, said one of the difficulties in taking care of senior citizens was that the government has not adopted any mechanism or policy to provide accommodation for old people.
Old people find it hard to access loans for any business and therefore the City has proposed to the government to provide a higher fixed expenditure to support activities of senior citizens associations in the country.
