(CPV) - A very long time ago, our ancestors began the custom of starting writing as a new year came. To highlight the studious tradition, it holds a beautiful and interesting significance, bringing a profound sense of meaning in the Vietnamese cultural tradition.
The custom was often carried out by ancient scholars at the moment the New Year begins. After the New Year’s Eve, each person choose himself or herself a moment that is considered a good moment to start writing.
Although it is only a symbolic image, the ancestors attached great importance to the custom. In the old days, to start writing, ancestors often burned incense on their writing table, taking a new pen which was full of ink, writing on flower-printed papers or red paper. Writers often started writing in a quiet atmosphere while their mind was peaceful.
Different people chose different subjects to write. Some people only wrote the date. Meanwhile, poets often composed a poem to express their aspiration or will in a new year, then sticking the poem on the wall to enjoy.
The custom aimed to highlight the study; therefore, initial handwritings in a new year represented the beginning of a career, study and writing for the whole year. Above all, the writers put down their dreams of a successful year in study in the initial letters.
Although the custom, at present, is not as popular as in the old days, many people treasure it, especially among families of studious tradition.
To maintain and develop the beautiful custom, at the beginning of a lunar New Year, scholars often hold New Year writing and present letters to people at temples and communal houses, to encourage people to study./.
