(CPV) - The number of foreign tourist arrivals to Vietnam in the first month of 2014 reached an estimated 722,350, up 7.5 percent compared to December 2013 and up 21 percent against the same month last year, according to the General Department of Statistics.

This month, almost all tourism markets saw rises. The sharpest increase went to Russia with a 89 percent increase over a year previous. Following it were Hong Kong (China) (up 87 percent), Germany (58 percent), the Philippines (21 percent) and Norway (20 percent).

Travel companies said that Vietnam is in the busy season of receiving foreign tourists. However, the high growth in the number of foreign arrivals to the country in the first month of 2014 is unexpected. In 2014, the country’s tourism industry is expected to welcome more than 8 million foreign arrivals.

Ho Chi Minh city greeted about 382,000 foreign tourist arrivals this month, a 12 percent increase over a year earlier. Of these, tourists arriving the city by air reached 300,000, up 10 percent, while those coming by road and sea were 82,000, up 20 percent.

The city’s total tourism turnover (including travel agencies, restaurants and hotels) was estimated at VND7.9 trillion in January, up 17 percent./.
