The garden belongs to Le Duc Giap, from Bai Village, Thanh Oai District. Giap’s family business used to be making fireworks. After the government banned their production, trade and use, Duc borrowed VND30 million (USD1,400) to start an orchard.

When his oranges started to bring good profits, other people attributed it to luck. Giap decided to make trees that bear multiple fruits to prove his ability.

“People buy peach blossoms and kumquats every year, so it must be a little boring during other times. I wanted to make a unique tree for Tet,” he said.

Without being discouraged, he tried again the next year. He said, “I succeeded. I was so happy because I did what other people thought was just my dream.”

At first, no one wanted to buy the tree because of its appearance, so Giap lent it to the village for display. The tree attracted many visitors.

In 2011 and 2012, he sold 60 and 70 trees respectively and earned hundreds of million of VND.
