The life of a six-year-old boy in HCM City is being threatened with tetanus caused by a traffic accident, but his parents cannot do anything to save him due to their poverty.

Huynh Minh Phat now can no longer speak and he suffers from periodic seizures and pains, making him unable to attend school.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Bich from the HCM City-based Hospital for Tropical Diseases said, “His injuries resulted from traffic an accident and he has not yet recovered and he has contracted tetanus. Hopefully he will be strong enough to overcome his condition.”

He has been hospitalised for more than a week, costing his family over VND1 million (USD47.6) per day, however his parents have paid just VND1.024 million, as no one wants to lend them.

The vice chairman of Vinh Chau Town Peoplel’s Committee, Phan Thanh Nha, said Phao’s family is the poorest in the area. They receive free health insurance cards. Phao and her husband had to come to HCM City to earn living, so they sent their four children to their parents. Phat is the youngest child and also the only boy.

The husband worked in construction and the wife worked as a domestic help. Despite being six, Phat was never offered a chance to go to school even though he wanted to.

Six months ago, the couple spent VND15 million to buy an old boat for fishing, however, due to lack of experiences, the fish they caught were too small to cover the fuel costs. So, they had to stop their fishing venture.

Recently, while playing on the roadside, Phat met with a traffic accident, suffering from many injuries. On February 3, he came down with a high fever, and had a seizure. Doctors said that he suffered from tetanus, which needs long-term treatment. He also faces with the high risk of pneumonia and infection.
