Compared to last year’s Tet (Lunar New Year), this Tet of the Horse saw the number of hospital visits including hospitalizations for emergency treatment increase by three times to over 153,800 nationwide, the Ministry of Health reported.
Of these patients, 35,770 received emergency treatment for their injuries caused by traffic accidents and 56 were victims of firecrackers.
Doctors performed 13,660 surgeries, including 383 on traffic victims who suffered brain injuries.
Of the total number of patients hospitalized, 934 died at hospitals, including 203 traffic victims.
There was no death caused by explosives during the festival, the ministry said.
Dr. Nguyen Tien Quyet, director of Viet Duc Hospital in Hanoi, said that the hospital received about 120 patients per day during this Tet.
The patients suffered injuries from traffic accidents, from firecrackers exploding, food poisoning and other incidents, Dr Quyet said.
By the fourth day of the Lunar New Year (February 3), the hospital had received 550 in-patients, 30 of whom were in critical conditions and had to rely on respirators.
At Bach Mai Hospital, a 32-year-old man died on February 3, a day after he was hospitalized for problems caused by excessive drinking.
The man, of Hanoi’s Thanh Tri District, drank liquors of different kinds during the previous few days and had suffered from methanol poisoning before his hospitalization, said Dr Nguyen Dam Chinh, at the hospital’s antitoxic center.
Unlike previous Tets, when there were very few suicides, this Tet saw many suicide cases involving pesticides and herbicides, Dr. Chinh said, adding that many of the victims are 21-22 years old.
In Ho Chi Minh City, 1,466 traffic victims were taken to 61 hospitals in the city for emergency treatment during the six Tet days, from January 29 to February 3. Of these patients, 115 suffered brain injuries
These hospitals also received about 14,170 other patients, of whom 7,700 were in-patients.
